Ha. I know why I've dated so many physicists, mathematicians and programmers.
Seriously, that was a lot of concentrated truth. You just forgot the great humor.

I've 'dated' a good bit, but it's definitely the geeks that are more up for a 'relationship.' Although I do enjoy roping myself a bad boy now and then, it'll probably be a geek that I end up with...

Another XKCD lover! I love it even though I was a liberal arts major (and, true to form, don't understand the complicated mathematics) :P ;)

I gotta say, when I saw the title of your post I was a little sceptical but you've convinced me. So, how do I sign up and where do I find these mega-lover geeks?! :)

Where are they? I've had a difficult time finding quality men these days - apparently, I'm looking in the wrong places.

If you know where the good ones are, by all means, point me in their direction!

Actually, most guys I really met there were gay artists, but well...

Can't say if the cyclists were "quality men" (great expression) since I didn't really talk to them, but at least I saw many good-looking ones. Maybe it's just the combination of a 3-day beard and a bike.
When I was there cyclists used to greet themselves, so you maybe can try that ;)

Oooo...I'm a sucker for facial hair. It's my downfall.

Although, it's tough to find many cyclists this time of year - everyone is trying to navigate the ice-encrusted sidewalks without spraining or breaking something.

I'm a fan of spring and summer - when I can break out my flirty sundresses and sandals, and the men are out in full force in cargo shorts and faded Red Sox caps. This girly girl is a sucker for a sexy, scruffy man in a Sox cap...

I've dated nothing but geeks and I can tell you from experience, being able to find the derivative of a variable is not nearly as important as being able to find the clitoris. From now on, I'm only dating outlaws.

You forgot to mention the potential down-sides.

1. Some geeks have sub-optimal personal hygiene, and do not brush, floss, and bathe frequently enough. Of course, some geeks are very tidy geeks.

2. Some geeks are Aspergers-like, and perserverate on narrowly defined bands of interest. If you're just not that into their particular geeked-out set of interests, some geeks can be rather poor company. Of course, some geeks are exactly the opposite, so this is nowhere near pervasive.

3. Some geeks have poor social skills, are not perceptive about non-verbal social cues , and tend not to notice things about their girlfriend, that their girlfriend would like them to notice, like that it's her birthday, or that it's your 1 year anniversary of the first time you held hands on the Subway home from a movie, and things like that, or that she's frowning ever so slightly at you and wants you to ask her what's bothering her.

4. Some geeks have no self-esteem. I experienced this one personally. As a geek with low self esteem myself, I have willingly entered into a relationship with a woman I had nothing in common with, and admired absolutely nothing about her, nor was I even attracted to her. I accepted her advances because I felt I deserved nothing, and that nobody would want to be with me, just because of particular things about me. This dooms a relationship. Make sure the geek you select is capable of being picky and rejecting people he doesn't like, or you may find out later that he really isn't into you at all, but he will definitely accept any and all female attention that is offered, because he is, in a word, desperate.

I am not saying even that any of the above are common, or frequently the issue, just that people are individuals, and many geeky individuals will have one of the above issues that may put you off.

I confirm about education. Do not forget that our weak social and dating skills have left us wanking more than often, which makes us shooting pretty fast.

wicked: Yep, I wrote that for e2. I kind of wanted to get it posted here at some point, which I <em>think</em> is okay since posting content to e2 does not give up any rights to the IP (I checked). Sorry it was weird to see it again.

I don't think I'll repost anything else from my e2 days, though.

"...or that she’s frowning ever so slightly at you and wants you to ask her what’s bothering her."

Or sometimes they (and by "sometimes they" i mean "i") will notice, but refuse to get drawn into that and so they ignore it.

If you want to talk, i'll talk. But i'm not going to play some "If you really love me, you'll ask me what's wrong" game in the interests of proving my worth. You can keep that sort of passive-aggressive testing away from me, because i'll fail it proudly every single time.

(I'm totally guilty about the rest of the stuff, though. I barely remember my own birthday, let alone anything else...)

Everything you said is absolutely true - especially the bit about the geek's unfailing loyalty. Another good place to look for geeks is on World Of Warcraft, make sure you do an age verification before commiting to a 12yr old.

Heh, I think I saw this back in 2004 when you first posted it - it seems familiar - but it is still a fun read. And bonus points for the XKCD link. ;-)

Don't forget geeks are often good with our hands. We're handy around the house, and we can handle all the A/V gear - and enjoy it. :-)

Mist 1 - Only the unethical, immature geeks. While I may have played around with, uh, unauthorized access shall we say, back in college, I would never violate someone's personal information. It just isn't ethical. As an IT Director I can access pretty much anything at work - everyone's email, files, IM messages, etc. I don't just because I know it isn't right. You need to find an ethical geek. :-)

Browneyedgirlie - Oh, I *know* there are a lot of single geeks in Boston and Metrowest. (I live in Worcester and work in Marlborough.) You have the entire 128 Corridor of High-Tech companies packed with geeks. I'm sure you can find one. ;-)

Anonymous - You just need to find a geek who has geeked out on sex, and/or educate them. Some geeks know quite a lot of about anatomy and what to do with it.

Warren - 1-3: Yeah, there are geeks, then there are the otaku or similar level geeks who Do Not Play Well With Others. The ones who give geeks a bad name. Geeks can be better about important dates though - that's what PDAs are good for. Never forget a date - put it in your Treo. :-) 4. A lot of geeks have self-image issues, I've been there too. A lot of that is because society long poked fun at the geek, and we absorb that.

wow, this post sure was popular.

you have definitely opened up my eyes to geeks now....

although, i did date this one semi-geek in college. he cheated on me. so not all geeks are good geeks.

but they do have their advantages......excellent post. thank you for educating your female readers. :)

"3. Some geeks have poor social skills, are not perceptive about non-verbal social cues , and tend not to notice things about their girlfriend, that their girlfriend would like them to notice, like that it’s her birthday, or that it’s your 1 year anniversary of the first time you held hands on the Subway home from a movie, and things like that, or that she’s frowning ever so slightly at you and wants you to ask her what’s bothering her."

Hmm, I thought that was all men.

There are only 10 types of people - those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I got my first Console, an Atari 2600, at the age of 5, typed in my first lines of Basic by the age of 8 and installed Borland C++ 3.1 aged 12, but could use Assembler only for about one year, because I had no extended memory in my machine.
Today I am 25, a Diploma Computer Scientist and Linux Server Administrator at a University, secret graphics artist, I can type faster than many people read, play Tetris in Death Mode for the fun of it and am an undying romantic with a weak spot for poetry, that appreciates music for it's mathematical beauty, geeky by nature.
I know exactly what this article is about, but I seem to have incredible compatibility issues with most mainstream motherboards... Although the hygiene part is not the problem, I wash every day (even my hair!) and know the definition and use of terms like peeling, body lotion, after shave and Pantene Hair Repair, though none of them is digital. Maybe the Interfaces I want them to implement are too precise in their declaration, because of the heavy super Interfaces they extend. Often they fail a considerable amount of my checkstyle and Unit tests and in most cases they don't come with a development repository or debian packages for a simple update. Yet what I need is very simple:

public HappyGeek wishComeTrue() {
    Geek you = new Geek();
    me.love(you, Time.INFINITY + 1);
    you.love(me, Time.INFINITY + 1);
    you.marry(me);
    me.addToFamily(you);
    Iterator children = you.getChildIterator();
    while (children.hasNext()) {
        Child newChild = children.next();
        you.giveBirth(newChild);
        me.love(newChild, Time.INFINITY);
        me.addToFamily(newChild);
    }
    me.makeHappy(me.getFamily());
    if (you.isHappy() && me.isHappy
        && you.getTetrisScore()

I have had my geek now for 11 years (discovering him before they became trendy). He has so many skills! Like the ones mentioned above, he is great with everything, computers, cars and womens anatomy. A little socially inept, but who cares. When geeks get together, they come into their own.
They make beautiful children and love to teach them all sorts of useful stuff, fortunately neglecting football scores and skills.

I happen to be one of these geeks but I've gone down a bit of a different path... I've given up on trying to find a good woman and I'm just waiting to run into her randomly... I've also been scouring through information on how to please her when i do... i DO happen to know where the clitoris is and the g spot and know about multiple orgasms and several other... enjoyable things... to spend time doing before after or during sex... I'm also not just looking for sex... i happen to be looking for someone to just be able to talk to for an hour or 3 without being severely annoyed or bored out of my skull... it's not the topic or the intelligence of the conversation that matters... it's 100% personality... if you want to find one of these guys the one thing you HAVE to do is keep thier minds running faster than they can keep up with... doesn't matter how just keep them distracted from the fact that they are who they are and keep them focused on the idea that you are there in front of them fun and happy to be there with them for whatever reason and don't give them a chance to withdraw... my biggest personal problem has been as a few people mentioned here self doubt... if given time i will actually start listing what's wrong with me rather than think about how to respond to you... so next time you find yourself looking at one of these guys if you do try just flat out ambush him... after about 30 minutes of shell shock i can assure you you'll have him all to yourself and he won't know what just happened but he'll be trying not to screw it all up...

What about female geeks... they do exist....

and in my experience, the male geeks are normally a bit more focused on their internet images of women so they don't even see a female (excluding model-beauty) geek in front of them. Sigh.

<strong>Why geek make good lovers...</strong>

I'm a geek. Doesn't necessarily mean I haven't developed pro-social skills. But just because I have a high nature of interpersonal intelligence doesn't mean that I can't be intelligent in an intrapersonal perspective.

I loved this article. As a happily engaged geek to an accidentally discovered undercover geek I completely agree with the points you make. Geeks are thoughtful, loyal, funny and can provide excellent oral stimulation and continuous sexual gratification when given the right training and advice. I also thought mrdowsts lines of code very evocative and possibly a new form of machine poetry.

I just broke up with a geek after 4 great weeks of amazingly great sex and attention. In the end it came down to the fact that his house smelled like cat pee. EVERYWHERE. I love cats and have four of my own but the cat pee thing told me he couldn't take care of himself. When he asked me to move in after dating 4 weeks I had to go.

I am all about geeks now. Hopefully the next one will not live in a sty.

It cracks me up that people sit around recommending geeks as "must date" material. Granted, a geek myself I'm rahter biased towards other geeks, but that's largely because I need someone that I can have an animated talk with that actually *understands* what I'm saying, and isn't just nodding their head trying to be polite.

I think it is incredibly superficial to just "try geek dating on for size." Get involved with someone because you have something in common with them. Trust me, as appealing as geek dating might seem to you - if you don't enjoy endless conversations about the soon-to-be-released Robert Jordan novel, why Terry Pratchett is pure genius and an excellent social commentator, or why Monty Python is comedy for the smart masses then leave while there is still time. Also, cliche as it is, if you don't have appreciation for gaming and/or see hours upon hours of WoW, Magic, or D&D as a waste of time than you are completely barking up the wrong tree. Trust me, for the most part that's not something you learn to appreciate it. Either take it or leave it, and if you would rather "leave it" I feel I speak for most of geekdom when we say don't let the door hit you on the way out. We'd rather take that, thatnmonths/years of disdain for our chosen hobbies when we don't have anything bad to say about the interests that you choose to entertain.

not just geeks, but pretty much anyone who gets knocked down by the popular guys.
Like bass players... bass players need some love.
